Just finished reading “Bloody Mary” biography of Queen Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII. 500 years ago the English were killing each other over whether the kingdom would be catholic or protestant. SOS

Mary's policy was to reinstate Catholicism as the State Church with all the rituals pertaining thereto.She had 200-300(?) mostly younger Protestant subjects killed. This was nothing compared to what was going on across the Channel in France and Germany.

Fortunately for England, she died early in her reign and her half-sister, Elizabeth, assumed the Crown.
