Obama cancels US-Egypt military drills over violence

CHILMARK, Massachusetts -- U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday canceled joint U.S.-Egypt military exercises, saying America's traditional cooperation with Egypt “cannot continue as usual” while violence and instability deepen in the strategically important nation. It's unclear whether scrapping the Bright Star exercise will have any impact in stopping the clashes between Egypt's military-backed interim government and supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi. And Obama gave no indication that the U.S. planned to cut off its US$1.3 billion in annual military aid to Egypt.

Speaking from his vacation home on Martha's Vineyard, Obama said the U.S. wants democracy in Egypt to succeed. But he said achieving that outcome is not the responsibility of the United States.

“America cannot determine the future of Egypt,” Obama said. “That's a task for the Egyptian people. We don't take sides with any particular party or political figure.”

Deaths Now More Than 500

More than 500 people have died in Egypt since Wednesday in clashes between the interim government and Morsi's supporters. The government has declared a nationwide state of emergency and a nighttime curfew.

The Bright Star exercises are a multi-national effort designed to strengthen military-to-military relationships and improve readiness between U.S., Egyptian and other coalition forces. The air, ground and naval exercises were scheduled to start in mid-September and last about three weeks.

Got big laugh watching local tv news coverage of this story. The stated boldly "Prsident obama has had enough with the violence in egypt. He is cancelling the joint exercises...then at the end of the story .. US aid will continue"

There is a rumor tonight that putin is negotiating a military aid package with egypt.

Seems like a logical next move.

Obama is an idiot. He’s really on Morsi’s side and that of the Muslim Brotherhood. He will mess up our relations with Egypt for years to come. Putin will take advantage of this. Dubai/UAE are lending mega billions of bucks to Egypt so they don’t need our stinking Obama money. They can say screw you Obama and do what’s right for their country rather than what Obama and his Regime tries to dictate.

The U.S. has NO money leverage at all at this point in time, but Obama & Co. can’t seem to figure that out and neither can the MSM. We have little clout at all, and are busy alienating the Egyptian army which is all that stands between Egypt being a more secular state or another Islamist terrorist state under Sharia law. Man, this fascist dictator we have for a President is such bad news for our country. Impeach him.

Speaking from his vacation home on Martha's Vineyard, Obama said the U.S. wants democracy in Egypt to succeed.

“Remember, democracy never lasts long.

It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself.

There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”

Wrong move. Shows allies we bolt. 35 years of US involvement in Egypt...gone. Thanks Mr. President for misunderstanding that Egypt is fighting OUR ENEMY too!

Oh? What’s that you say? MB is our “Democratic friend”?

Maybe you should of stayed a Community organizer, you’d a done far less damage to US national interest and prestige around the world.
