During an August 4 appearance on C-SPAN's Newsmakers, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) said gun control failed in April and "has no chance of passage now" because of "some on the left like the mayor of New York City." As reported by Andrew Johnson at National Review, Leahy said, "[NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg] actually turned some people off that we actually might have gotten for supporters."
He said that Bloomberg's ads were especially detrimental to the gun control push and he took issue with the rabid nature in which Bloomberg approached the issue. Earlier in the summer, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also said that Bloomberg's ads were "not going to be effective" in the gun control push.
Nevertheless, Leahy hedged his bets by adding that gun control ultimately failed because the "far Right" believes "the Second Amendment allows [them] to have anything."

Bloomberg thinks himself to be an all-powerful kinglike figure. His efforts actually destroyed his own efforts and he'll be shocked at what happens in Colorado too with the recalls.
Maybe Kelly Ayotte will see this and wake up and stop hanging around John McCain and Lindsey Graham. She got a lot of ads against her and then became wishy-washy on things like immigration.
Senator Leahy should challenge Mayor Bloomberg to a duel. Preferably with sawed-off shotguns at five paces.
Hey Doomberg! You didn’t get the memo that your supposed to back-stab Americans surreptitiously, you whiny little weasel?
It appears to me that Bloomberg is all for Second Amendment rights.
Well, yess. The wording is plain and absolute. The RKBA refers to "Arms" and says the RKBA "shall not be infringed." whihch means that it must not be regulated as to what arms or who can K and B them. Arms are arms and the term includes spears, knives, slingshots, nuclear weapons, etc. There are no exemptions in the 2nd Amendment. It does not say that the RKB muskets and swords shall not be infringed. It does not say RKB SMALL A shall not be infringed. The word "except" does not occur in the Amendment.
"Hey, Bloomberg! You are rabid!"
Reproached by Leaky Leahy. It doesn’t get much funnier than this.
Ayotte does not support gun control and Bloomberg’s group targeted her in ads that I had to put up with for a month or more.
“Ayotte does not support gun control and Bloombergs group targeted her in ads that I had to put up with for a month or more.”
Yes, Ayotte voted against the gun control bill. But she has since become one of “our republicans” as Schumer says. She caved on immigration reform and I think Bloombergs ads had something to do with it. They made her nervous or something. And now she cannot be trusted. She’s hanging out with McCain too much and going to all these dinners, etc.
That pooch’ll never walk right again before he’s finished.
Better time than any to introduce new tagline...Although I did love the last one and will bring it back...
Here it is for posterity:
When Superman and Batman fight, the only winner is crime.
Senator Leahy should challenge Mayor Bloomberg to a duel. Preferably with sawed-off shotguns at five paces.
They'd both miss.
NUTS !
Bloomberg routinely violates the FARs by flying his personal helicopter from the rooves of buildings he owns in NYC. In fact, I’d be fascinated to learn how someone who has a bad heart keeps passing his FAA medical exams. Rules are for the LITTLE people, you know.
Leahy’s full of crap. Bloomberg’s a uber-billionaire, Leahy probably just a multi-millionaire, thanks to his lifetime in the Senate. Everyone knows that billionaires are the smartest people in the world and rightfully should be telling us all how to live.
These idiot RINOs who go with guns, taxes and jobs ignoring the long term suicide of the GOP and the 2nd amendment.
Gun Control is probably more popular than amnesty amongst independent voters they supposedly want. Neither should pass.
