According to an article, Martin was searched at school shortly before the incident, and school police found jewelry including wedding rings and a screwdriver (described as a burglary tool) in his backpack. They were described as “found items” by school police to get around filing charges, and were therefore not connected to a burglary. These items are still being held by the police. A local has been trying to get the police to find the owners.
This was part of a conspiracy by the school police chief to lower the “crime statistics” in schools by not reporting criminal activity (it worked - he received a commendation). He launched an investigation into who leaked this information, and was fired when his officers revealed the scheme.

Odd that CBS/NBC/ABC/CNN/MSNBC/NYT/WaPo haven't reported this ;-)
