Sometimes try reading an entire post before going off on the rails. I DID state that it was likely we will see some hard times. But nut job Mad Max prepper crazy is very poor advice to give to folks. (not saying you are) There are a lot of people sitting on huge gold losses due to panic.
To answer your "Fear or Common Sense" manifesto, I will use the common sense methodical "win in every scenario" approach every time. Tell me with 100% certainty that a two mile wide asteroid is going to hit tomorrow?, then I might talk a little about fear.
The items you listed are true poor economic practices, but those who avoid debt, have diversifying capital, and prepare "wisely" will be okay.

The whole point of owning gold and other precious metals (at least as far as I'm concerned) is not to pad your portfolio now, but to have it when your portfolio is good for nothing other than tinder for a cooking fire. So what if gold was $1600/oz last summer and $1200 this summer? WTSHTF is when you/we will wish we had it.
That said, I'm glad the price has come down...so I can buy more.
