Ignorance is a poor excuse. It is not a unique case. Spyked drinks are major way to reach “consent” for sex in a muslim world, including non-Sharia nations. There are numerous stories like that from Turkey etc.
But remember, the UAE is presented as ‘moderate’ and in fact, is touted to turn a ‘blind eye’ to the partying done by Christians. IMO, it’s like the spider and the fly.
