70+ votes for immigration reform?
Politco ^ | 4/25/13 | Carrie Budoff Brown

Posted on 04/25/2013 7:27:47 AM PDT by cotton1706

The two lead negotiators in the Senate’s Gang of Eight said on Thursday that they believe their immigration reform bill will not just have a filibuster proof majority in the Senate — but majority support from both parties.

“I think it is doable,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said the bill cannot slip by with 60 votes because the House would feel less pressure to take it up. Others in the negotiating group have said they think the bill could win at least 70 Senate votes.

But the predictions of majority support from Republicans and Democrats is a more ambitious goal than any members have previously stated.

“We want a large Republican vote,” Schumer said at the breakfast.

He said the Gang of Eight had vote counting in mind while they were negotiating a deal between agricultural workers and growers on a visa program for the industry. Schumer said the group worked hard to win over growers in the Southeast, which is predominantly represented by Republicans and conservative Democrats.

The senators said they support amending the immigration overhaul bill to address shortcomings in the system that led to the Boston Marathon bombings.

It is too early know exactly what needs to be fixed, McCain said, but the potential solutions should be clear by the time the bill reaches the Senate floor in June.

“We are completely open to amendments that would in any way prevent what happened in Boston,” McCain said.

McCain said members of the Gang of Eight remain in contact with key House members. He said he spoke Wednesday with Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) to thank him for backing comprehensive immigration reform at an event Monday. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has addressed the Republican Study Committee, McCain said.

But McCain added that the more serious conversations won’t take place until after the Senate passes a specific package.

McCain praised President Barack Obama’s role in the process, with Schumer adding that it has been “just about perfect.”

McCain quickly jumped in: “I wouldn’t go that far,” drawing laughs.

Good God are these people pushing this thing!! After the gun control loss, they are desperate for a victory and they're probably bribing and arm-twisting like crazy to get the margin as large as possible to put pressure on the House. Schumer, McCain and Graham are very insidious men!

All this to totally destroy what’s left of the Republican Party with millions of votes to go into the “D” column. Insanity! What the hell’s the matter with our people (excuse me, “those people”)

We’ll be guaranteeing “D” victories for a generation or two.

It’s mindless!

One question for the GOP.

Why on earth would you concede any ground whatsoever to the left on any law?

Anything they promise you that gets enacted will simply be ignored by a dictator who picks and chooses which laws he likes and doesn’t like.

There’s no point to compromise with a maniacal despot running the executive branch.

Just say “no”.

And bring back American jobs, while we’re at it.

McCain and Graham are democrats and they’ll get the usual dupes to help them. They’ve already got Flake and Rubio. They’ll pull in Lisa Murhowski, Mark Kirk, Susan Collins and probably Rob Portman and Mike Enzi. Then they’ll go after those that are leaving anyway, Chambliss and Johannes and Chambliss will tale Isaakson into it. Reid will strong-arm Heller etc.

This is like the nightmare of 1986 all over again, the same lies, and empty promises. 2040, and not a finger will have been lifted to secure the border. These people are all TRAITORS!

Someone has to grab everyone of the 8 gangsters and force them to watch this testimony.

I have never seen as much arrogance from our government as I have seen in the last 5 years.

Yes the arrogance existed well before the dark lord skirted our requirements for pResident but what we see before us is a government without ANY limits. NONE whatsoever.

There is not even a semblance of trying to hide their total disregard for OUR constitutional protection against an abusive government.

Once they go so far as to ban EVERYTHING which threatens their strangle hold on power there is NO turning back.

My thoughts about Schuuuuumer cannot be printed on the FR based upon the forum rules but suffice it to say, I wish he had taken a shower and millions of others had not.

The only good thing I see coming out of this will be those who vote for it will make themselves known to all.

Their actions betray them as they betray us.

Rumor has it that obama wants to kill off the republican party. If true, after watching the GOPe in action with their amnesty redux, he and I will finally have something we agree on.

The “good news” is, gang members can get a “waiver” from being deported if they “denounce” gangs. ROTFL!!! Politicians are morons.

Anyone know what the house vote count looks like? Unfortunately, they probably only need a dozen Rs to vote with all the Ds to get this POS legislation passed. The combination of crony capitalism, multiculturalism, and political correctness is hard to beat.

We’ll be guaranteeing “D” victories for a generation or two.

Generation or two? How about a permanent majority. Look to CA today as to what the US will look like demographically in 2050. How many generations will CA remain Democrat?

And let's get real about legal immigration. Every ten years we have what amounts to an amnesty. With 1.2 million LEGAL IMMIGRANTS ENTERING ANNUALLY, they will be able to vote eventually and two thirds of them will vote Dem. Illegal immigration is the shiny little bauble that distracts us from the real game changer--legal immigration. The status quo will make the Dems the permanent majority party. Amnesty just hastens the process.

The 1965 Immigration Act changed this nation forever. Like the frog slowly being boiled alive, some Reps are now waking up to what has been happening for decades. Now it is probably too late.

The U.S. adds one international migrant (net) every 36 seconds. Immigrants account for one in 8 U.S. residents, the highest level in more than 90 years. In 1970 it was one in 21; in 1980 it was one in 16; and in 1990 it was one in 13. In a decade, it will be one in 7, the highest it has been in our history. And by 2050, one in 5 residents of the U.S. will be foreign-born. There are electoral consequences to these rapid, massive demographic changes.

87 percent of the 1.2 million legal immigrants entering annually are minorities as defined by the U.S. Government and almost all of the illegal aliens are minorities. By 2019 half of the children 18 and under in the U.S. will be classified as minorities and by 2042, half of the residents of this country will be minorities. Generally, immigrants and minorities vote predominantly for the Democrat Party. Hence, Democrats view immigration as a never-ending source of voters that will make them the permanent majority party.

As bizarre as it seems it looks like the GOP is going to back this amnesty bill and it will likely get ramrodded through the House and we will get 30 million new unskilled residents who don’t speak English and want welfare.

Then to top it all off the GOP will vote to tax the internet effectively killing the last bastion of free enterprise.

Do you suppose ‘gangs’ will include Jihadi sleepers like the Brothers Jihad of Boston?

...and therein lies the problem. There isn't a single politician AT ANY LEVEL of government that has greater concern for the needs of the citizen than he/she has for their own job security. They are ALL scum!

Agreed.

If the GOP agrees to this, they are off my vote-for list. I’ve been waffling waiting to look at candidates before deciding, but this will take precedence.

For real.

GOP wake up, and start doing things for your nation. Now.

On amnesty, Obama wins either way. If amnesty is stopped, the Reps will be blamed and termed racists, bigots, nativists, etc. If amnesty passes, Obama gets the credit for fulfilling a campaign promise and the Dems gets millions of new voters.

Moreover, even a protracted path to citizenship will give the Dems a new campaign issue in 2014. They will push for a more rapid path to citizenship and denounce the Reps for treating immigrants as second-class citizens.
