Rather than giving English teachers the freedom to teach literature, the Common Core mandates that a far greater percentage of classroom time be spent on “fact-based” learning... one teacher claimed that she had to give up having her students read Shakespeare in favor of Malcolm Gladwell’s Tipping Point because it was “fact-based” and Shakespeare was not...

This is the part that bothers me too. The standards are not much different from those in California, at least from what I can see so far. But we have already watered down children's exposure to sophisticated literature in favor of simplistic prose by "writers of color." It used to be that a 14-year-old could read Huck Finn or Tom Sawyer or Anne of Green Gables. Now they can't understand that kind of writing at all. The sentences are too long, the vocabulary too advanced, the humor and observations too subtle.

Replace it with text on how to install an air conditioner or articles on how the brain works and you'll eliminate their exposure to real literature almost completely. This leaves them with very few options for entertainment and culture. We already have a generation of kids who think that TV and movies consist of nothing but cartoons, reality shows, and violent or ghostly fantasies. Well-written literature on social, emotional, or character-development issues, the kind that elevates a person's thought processes and awareness will be utterly beyond them.
