Palin ran into a brick wall. Every effort she made failed to launch. Of course I am just guessing, but my impression is that she got rugs pulled out from under her and was not surefooted enough to recover. Something like what happened to Colin Power in 1996. Powell and Palin are both natural politicians and in the end that was held against them.
