On immigration, there are doubts as to whether he seriously wants a deal; many Republicans fear he would prefer to point a finger of blame at GOP lawmakers during the 2014 elections — and thus perhaps win the House back for Democrats

I don't seriously believe even he thinks that this will happen, if the democrats couldn't win back the house with him on ballot in 2012. There is no way they will INCREASE their turnout in 2014. (Not to mention that the Republican were wise enough to gerrymander enough safe districts to hold the House against anything but a landslide of epic proportions.

It could happen if the Republicans cave enough, as the leadership show signs of wanting to do.

They could discourage the base, or even split it.
