Flour and oatmeal and beans, plus powdered milk, dried veggies are in professionally packed long term #10 cans. Have baking powder in professionally packed 2.5 cans, plus gobs of other foods packed by that company in 2.5 and #10 cans. I don't touch that until I run out of grocery store stored foods. Most of those packed by that company (without the presence of oxygen) is good for 20-25 years. I know for sure that food will be good and be there when I need it.
Agree. What is a bummer are all the pull-off tab lids that cans come with anymore. I just don’t think they last as long, in fact in that same batch as the milk I had a few cans of canned Hormel lasagna. The pull off lids seemed a little “loose” for lack of better description. Not tightly snugged down, they had some “give” to them when pushing on them. I pitched them too.
PIZZA!
Anyone know the best way to “keep” potato flakes? Vacuum seal and mylar? Thanks.
High calorie weight gainer powders for teenagers that want to bulk up. Ton of calories in powdered form in delicious flavors. You will need water to mix it in, but water is number 1 on a preppers list anyway
Don’t forget the Twinkies......
Interesting facts but I have found that there is a whole lot of difference between ingredients in those cans from even three years ago to now.
I don’t remember ever looking at the expiration date on a can of anything several years ago, now I always look. Found a can of Pet evaporated milk in the back of a cupboard I was cleaning out that had an expiration date of December 2011 on it. Opened it because I decided to make a cheese sauce. It was NASTY smelling and very, very dark! No dents or holes in the cans and just threw it out.
Dak Ham yes, spam I can live without.
nuts won’t keep that long....and oils....I guess its good to keep a rotating stock of all this stuff with the key word being “rotate”....is you’re prepping, you have to use your preps up....
I have enough zucchini relish to put into my will.
that sucks, it really makes you question how long they could last.
i am sure it is a money thing. new lids must cost less.
How about Salt Cod? I go to fish markets and it sits right out in the open, not packaged. I would assume that if dried out fish can stay out in the open like that, storing it for a long duration shouldn’t be a problem.
I bought a 50# bag of rice yesterday, and broke it up into eight quart-size ziplock bags. Now I worry about moisture, although we live in the desert. Maybe I should have just left it in the 50# bag?
Bulk tobacco, tubes, and hand cigarette maker: check.
That’s what I figure all spicy sauces were designed for. The hotter the climate the hotter the spices because the faster the food rots.
nowadays, the cans are much thinner, flimsier....
however, I agree that cans last a lot longer than dated...if it gives off a lot of pressure when you open it, I'd throw it out....when in doubt, I understand that boiling for 10" will kill botulism....
For a gentler touch, grow Velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrastii)
Dak hams for sure! Also Vienna sausage. And I do have a few cans of Spam....but not too many.
:)
I cleaned out my aunt’s basement pantry after she passed. It was filled with leaking canned goods and canned goods that had exp dates five years past. I opened a few and had to leave the area.
