You are correct. A number of major league baseball execs knew there was a tremendous source of talent in black ballplayers. Branch Rickey was the first to hire one, but others like Bill Veeck had planned to do the same...even before the war. In fact, it is a little known fact that Larry Doby began playing for Cleveland later in '47.

The huge mistake many people made (and still make) was assuming that if Robinson hadn't made it, there would be no black ballplayers after him. That assumption has always be absurd....Robinson was just the first in a long line of great, black ballplayers. If he had failed, many others (and better players than Robinson) were more than ready to step in. America had turned a corner. And it is a part of American history. I plan to see the flick at some point.
