The Real Phantom Menace: Manufactured Outrage

The collector investment resell value of this Lego set just skyrocketed thanks to the cultural and racial hypersensitivity of those looking to be offended by anything and everything in the world.

article-2267062-171C790D000005DC-966_634x441

Why?

Back in January, a Turkish cultural group in Austria became outraged over a Lego set:

Lego has been accused of racism by the Turkish community over a Star Wars toy allegedly depicting a mosque.

The critics claim that the Jabba's Palace model, part of Lego's Star Wars range, offends Muslims as it resembles the Hagia Sophia mosque in Istanbul - one of the world's most renowned mosques.

Members of the Turkish Cultural Community of Austria group also accused the toy manufacturer of depicting Asians as having 'deceitful and criminal personalities'.

By what stretch of the imagination?

article-2267062-171C7B0A000005DC-253_634x387

Leaving the ridiculousness of the accusation aside, for a moment, I'd like to ask, "Why single out Lego?" Their toy set was influenced by George Lucas' movie. Why not go to the source and inspiration, instead? And if they're going to read racism into this, they must be hypersensitive to a lot of things going on in this world.

A post on the community's website contains a picture of the slug-like creature's Lego home, pointing out similarities with the Istanbul mosque.

Outraged Muslims have criticised the toy producer on the community's website, accusing it of deliberately placing contextual errors in the toy.

The case came to light when a Turkish man expressed his dissatisfaction with the toy after it was purchased for his son by a family member.

After investigating, Dr Melissa Günes, General Secretary of the Turkish Cultural Community, said that Lego had been contacted with an official complaint.

After initial resistance, the Danish company caved. I'm not sure why, as I believe world public opinion as well as common sense intelligence would see the complaint as either groundless or in the "who gives a rat's ass?" category:

“The critics claim that the Jabba’s Palace model, part of Lego’s Star Wars range, offends Muslims...”

Is there anything on Planet Earth that DOESN’T offend these hypersensitive dickheads?

Personally, I’m waaaaay past sick of hearing all their bleats about anything and everything.

For a bunch who seem to pride themselves on being “rugged fighters” they act and think an awful lot like a bunch of spoiled crybabies.

It is worse than that. I heard that Jar Jar Binks flushed a Koran down the waste recycling unit. Woe to us if anything should happen to him.

Wait a sec. According to wiki the Hagia Sophia is a former Orthodox patriarchal basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. The only major external part that was added to make it a mosque were the minarets. The original central part was um originally an orthodox Christian church. Shouldn’t eastern orthodox have priority in the outrage line?

Hagia Sophia - I have been there - was built as a church, and then taken over and desecrated by Muslims. So it’s weird that they are complaining about a drawing after they stole a church. And Hagia Sophia hasn’t been used as a mosque for years, it’s now a museum.

Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian cathedral and filled that role for 900+ years. It was then a mosque for 400 years or so. For coming up on 100 years it has been a museum.

If anybody has a right to be offended, it would be the Orthodox Christians who built it, not Muslims who stole it for a few centuries.

But the beautiful building in Constantinopolos is a Church, not a mosque. They should tear down the disgusting minarets.

Unless they stole it fair and square.... like in Animal Farm all the animals are equal, but the pigs are just more equal.

And before Hagia Sophia was built, it was the site of a temple to Diana- She who warned the people of an earth quake, and in gratitude, they took her crescent moon as their symbol.

After becoming Christian and capital of the Roman Empire, they added the 5 pointed star that represented Mary, Mother of G-d. (California state flag has that same star, but don’t tell the state legislature!)

When Richard I of England fought in the third Crusade, he had a crescent moon and star on his garments, signifying his alliance to the Roman Empire, whose capital was Constantinopolos.

When the Turks shelled breaches in the walls of Theodosius, and took over Constantinopolos, murdering most of its inhabitants, the Caliph took over the crescent and star, and so were many Christian symbols stolen.

Bravo!

And the sad thing is that the Orthodox Christians were on the verge of getting the Hagia Sophia (Church of the Holy Wisdom) back in 1878 until Queen Victoria permitted Prime Minister Disraeli to threaten war against the Russians if they dared try to help the Greeks get it back. (The British Empire helped Muslims against Christians for centuries, if doing so helped their own imperial and trade policy.)
