The Sherrif is an institution going back to Saxon Britain that provided local autonomy and a check on a rapacious Monarch.

What is the relationship between Sherrif and the local PDs..??

Is one subservient to the other, does one agency have more jurisdiction?

Schultheiß in Germany (which would include Soltis and Soltys in Slavic lands), and there's a reference that says the name Patel in India has the same origin ~ although that varies by language.

郡治安官 will suffice, as well as bailiff, constable, etc.

A sheriff is second only to the local governing council or official ~ think of him as an officer of the court(s) ~ and for the last 5,000 to 8,000 years we have had courts all over the place.
