We have a 40 ft sailboat that I could definitely live on. Of course it looks to be about double the size of this little house. 2 sofas, a table, a full kitchen, a bathroom, and 2 beds (one a queen and one a 3/4 berth).
Plus I have a new philosophy. Everything we own is just stuff and can be replaced if need be.
My pals on their boat have moved up, through two upgrades, from 36’ to 49’, I believe, and the larger is definitely more livable IMO.
dr gonzo gates from TRAPPER JOHN MD also lived in a beat up motor home on the parking lot of the hospital. why i remember this i do not know.
ps my plastic model stash wouldn’t fit in that.
In other words there are no division walls between the kitchen, living room, entertainment room, etc. and the ceiling is very high...you see the balcony runway, for the upstairs bedrooms similar to Hotels with “open air” where rooms surround a courtyard or lobby.
I had Holiday dinner at this home. One side of the house has a catherdral size window.....so there is much light that enters the entire area. It was fasinating to have dinner there...I enjoyed it very much.
I am still trying to find photos of this on line. I went there with his sister, who has a “stage name” so I can’t remember his last name. I’ll keep trying but this was about fifteen years ago I was there.
My rich banker uncle in Florida (buddies w/Dick Nixon and Bebe Rebozo) had one of those when they were the “in” thing.
No, he built the new walls ‘inside’ the original exterior walls, then took the exterior walls down. It was a huge house to begin with.
My gun safe is almost that big.
Our bathrooms are almost as big as those chicken coups they are promoting!

Good thread with lots of great/funny comments. I could live in something that small very comfortably. My wife would't like it.
I can imagine going up to nine in our present surroundings without much of a problem—and eleven if we could raise the roof on our upper story (about 400 square feet—where the kids bedrooms are, but sloped ceilings make things rather tight for squeezing in bunks). That said, since we both homeschool and live in the northern most county in Ontario (there is a great deal of land, as well as some people farther north, but the population is so sparse that local government runs differently), I can’t imagine raising many kids in much fewer square feet. Two wood stoves, room for adequate wood, and loads of coats and boots take up a certain amount of room, and given that the snow is on the ground for 4+ months out of the year and we are a good hour from anywhere to go indoors, we need some room. Plus, with the homeschooling, there are books—I count 13 book cases.
I know that some folks have raised more kids in a significantly smaller place—but homeschooling adds an entirely new dimension to it.
Given that you are from Utah and have nine kids, I’m guessing that you are Mormon and don’t homeschool—but I’d be interested in how you manage. I’m always looking for new ideas. (What do you drive? Our 16 year old Sienna is getting a bit crammed, as well as long in the tooth.)

First thing I would do would be frame in the front porch to add more space.
Our family car is a Chevrolet express 15 passenger 1 ton. I have a Jeep for my personal car but I commute by bike most of the time. I try to instill the fact that a bike is a viable form of transportation so my car is parked for most of the summer.
Yes my kids are in public school. My wife is a stay at home mom.

Architect Sarah Susanka has done very well with her The Not So Big House series of design books, talks on the subject, etc. Check out her web site and books on Amazon. She makes a lot of sense.
Based on our income, a lot of “financial planners” in the early 2000s would have told us to sell the house we’re in and buy 2x the house. Best house we never bought.
And I should have figured I would be reposting on that thread that was most of the way to 100 posts.
