In feudal England, the sheriff was sort of the last line of defense of the shire or county, representing the count or duke while they may have been absent serving in the king’s army, a bulwark against the king’s unmitigated power. The king also had his own man in the county level as well, the coroner. Over the years, the offices have changed a little bit, but this was their original purpose. Coroners still exist, but they have become the official arbiters of cause of death in unnatural circumastances.
It was not uncommon to find the sheriff and the coroner at odds over the administration of the local affairs. The sheriff was almost always the one who prevailed.

An excellent and salient point. Unfortunately, since law means nothing to the power-hungry mobsters currently running the federal leviathan, they WILL have it both ways.
