When, why and how did this become a “Civil Right,” allegedly the same as civil rights struggle for African Americans in the 50s/60s?

Because the Left can not win the arguments with traditionalists’ view.

After they re-frame it as a ‘struggle for equal justice, equal rights’, the liberals in liberal states can manage to pass the recognition of ‘same-sex marriage’ as law.
