Actial on the border checkpoints would work if all illegals would just enter through those checkpoints
but NO, they have to sneak across around unprotected areas.
Believe me in Texas alone millions sneak across ranchers lands. There are no border patrols on private lands.
BUT they also usually have to get to a road at some point which is how the inland check points came about
The checkpoints are usually at some natural confluence of lands so ht it kind of the small tip of a funnel.

I did not mean checkpoints on the border; we already have Ports of Entry staffed by Customs for that. I mean Border Patrol needs to patrol the actual border and concentrate enforcement on the border. For a long time pre-1970s that is how it was done. Border Patrol patrolled the border and Customs had CPO officers that also patrolled the border. The border was more secure and citizens were rarely harassed.
The decision to move enforcement away from the border and to highlight roads “near” the border instead was supposedly to save money, hasn’t worked to secure the border and certainly hasn’t saved money. We are pouring money at the border and still not securing it. Hard to secure anything if you don’t designate a definite area and secure it.
At one time there was an easement along the border for the purpose of patrolling the border, there were at one time horseback riders that patrolled the border mostly to keep livestock from crossing with diseases. In some areas there were horseback patrol riders on the border to interdict human traffic and drugs until the 1970s. My brother-in-law was one of the last CPO horse patrol officers in the US. There are still CPO officers on a reservation in AZ, but I don’t think they still use horses. Border Patrol has horse patrols now but they don’t stay on the border, in fact they are rarely on the actual border. In many areas there still is an easement but it is controlled by the Bureau of Land Management- Department of Interior and they either keep Border Patrol off it citing environmental concerns or charge Border Patrol to use it, in the form of “fees” or “fines” or whatever they call it for damage supposedly done to the area next to the border. This is insane, we need to designate our border as an area to secure, clear an easement and patrol and secure it. Nothing else makes sense.
I think a defined easement for the purpose of patrolling the border should be in effect the length of the border, and Border Patrol should patrol the actual border.
I know how it is done now, but it has not always been done that way. The way it is done now is obviously not effective at securing the border and harasses citizens without need.
If you think the checkpoints on roads is effective at stopping illegals and drugs why do we have such an issue with both?
