I gotta tell ya, I’m more than a little skeptical about the whole ‘intercepted by missiles’ part of the story. I’ll happily admit I was wrong if it turns out to be true but I seriously doubt it happened that way. Not that I don’t think it could be done but I just find it suspect that there were missile batteries online and ready to fire instantaneously at an incoming meteor with no warning.

There is zero percent chance of any missile launch onto something like this. You’d have to know some kind of indicator of it coming in and be able to track. I seriously that could happen.

But it sounds good.

You can put me in the highly skeptical column on the missile claim as well.

The missile intercept story is quoted from ‘Russian military’ source in Russia Today, their biggest internet news site I think

It’s at the link, but not confirmed of course

Its much more likely the meteor exploded or broke apart due to the heat and violence of its entry into the atmosphere.

I think the worKing concept with NIKE was to explode the interceptor in the path of the missile and let the faster pRojectile run into the shock wave. Kind of like a spike strip in the sky to disable a racing “car.”

The core of the Meteor must have been steel to make it through the atmosphere.
If so then I doubt missiles would break it apart since hot soft steel resists breaking.

Lose Lose as far as meteors go, if you don't break it, it explodes. Mercy.
