Had the date wrong. Leech, the attorney general of the State of Tennessee, had to go in and remove Blanton physically from the Governor's office and put Alexander in office early because of the pardon sales. I was at Fort Campbell December of 1977, 1978, and 1979 and remembered it was around Christmas and cold as the devil. I was originally from McNairy County and knew a good many of the players in the scandal.

I’m a lifelong resident of Nashville. I was just a little kid at the time, though. It was rather amusing that these fellow Dems were scrambling to swear in Lamar! early for fear ole Ray would empty out the prisons en masse. A decade later as a teenager, I almost walked smack into Ray at our corner grocery. I had to bite my tongue when I started to blurt out, “Pardon me, Governor.”
