My view of global military affairs:

1) Some countries are friendly to us -- like the UK. I would leave them alone.
2) Some countries are bad, but they don't bother us -- like Burma. I would leave them alone.
3) Some countries need to be taken to the woodshed. I would NEVER put boots on the ground. I would bomb their cities with napalm or heavy ordinance with the express purpose of killing men, women and children, and destroying objects of vital national and/or religious importance. End the war quick. Win at all costs.

I'm thinking Mali is in category #2 -- but maybe they should be in category #3. In any case, I think there is no reason to send an invading or occupying force. Nation building is for suckers.

We have not won a war since we stopped doing exactly that.

Exactly! Mali currently falls into category 2 but is quickly becoming a 3.

You’ve definitely got the right idea to win. The problem is that those in DC never quite want to win any conflicts. It has gotten so that patrols have to have a lawyer with them to tell them when they can shoot back!
