10 Reasons All Workers Benefit from Fixing the Immigration System
AFL-CIO Now ^ | 01/08/2013 | Mike Hall

There are 11 million aspiring citizens who love this country and call it home. Like immigrants before them, they came to this country for freedom and the opportunity to provide a better life for their children.

These immigrant families work hard, pay their taxes and contribute to their communities. But because of a broken and punitive immigration process that tears families from each other, there really is no "line" these aspiring citizens can get into to adjust their status and start down the pathway to citizenship.

The AFL-CIO and America’s union movement, along with a broad coalition of other groups, is mounting a new campaign to build a common-sense immigration process that includes a road map to citizenship and one that guarantees immigrant workers the same workplace rights and protections all workers deserve.

We know that immigration reform can be a controversial issue among our union members and all workers. But immigration reform with a path to citizenship and workplace rights doesn’t just benefit aspiring citizens and their families, it's good for all workers. Here are 10 reasons why.

As the immigration campaign continues, we will examine other key immigration issues.

1. The entire U.S. economy will grow.

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that immigration reform with a path to citizenship would generate an additional $1.5 trillion to the economy over 10 years.

2. Wages will rise for both immigrant and native workers.

In “Immigration for Shared Prosperity,” former Secretary of Labor Ray Marshall writes that studies show immigration reform with a path to citizenship can raise wages for immigrant workers by 6%. Also the study “Raising the Floor for American Workers” reports that under a path to citizenship, “The wage floor rises for all workers—particularly in industries where large numbers of easily exploited low-wage [undocumented] immigrants currently work.”

I do not know about you all but this sure does sound like the Union trying to sell the Union.3. More jobs will be created...They cannot create enough jobs now for our best and brightest..But already they have the illegals hired, earning big wages and no college loans to pay back.

Here it says,In New York, Los Angeles and Chicago alone, low-wage workers in immigrant-dense industries lose about $56 million a week in wage theft, according to the study Broken Laws, Unprotected Workers, which notes that the abuses are not limited to undocumented workers. “The best inoculation against workplace violations [wage theft] is ensuring workers know their rights and have full status under the law to assert them.”..I would like to ask every time illegals show up at any ER...Emergency Room Physician. It is a separate bill...lab fees separate billing..Radiology separate billing..So is it wage theft, when the DR who rendered his/her services sends out a bill only to have it never be paid ? Lab fee's sent out come back unpaid. The illegals have no problems ripping off dr's ,but become self righteous and demand money owed them, but refuse to pay others of whom are owed wages.Double standards here ?

What are the chances there will be any useful information in an article when the very first sentence is a boldfaced lie?

No Mr AFL-CIO Marxist they broke our laws to come here.

Most of them come here to sponge off the hard working Americans.

Most of them come here no to better themselves or learn about America.

They are here to vote for the Rat party, to change our culture and to ultimate destroy America as Founded.

By breaking our laws to come here they are CRIMINALS and should be treated as such.

One of the “advantages” to businesses who hire illegals is their illegal status. They can’t complain about their work or pay because they risk deportation. Make them legal and suddenly this advantage disappears. Businesses will just wait for the next batch of illegals to sneak across the border to underpay them.

In the past immigrants came here to be Americans. Now they come here to be (fill in the blank)s in America. They want no part of America except what they take from us.

I imagine successful bank robbers feel the same. They stole the money and now, because of a broken and punitive banking system, there is no "line" these aspiring wealthy investors can get into to adjust their status and make the money legitimately theirs. Sorry, but I don't feel sorry for those who break the law and then have trouble benefiting from their crimes, whether it is illegal immigrants, bank robbers, labor organizers, or democrat politicians.

If they want a pathway to citizenship then obviously they do want to be Americans.

If this does not convince union members, especially those non-Hispanic and non-Hispano Racist, to leave all unions....they are the biggest fools around

Illegal Alien Amnesty means that all those jobs not yet taken by Illegal Aliens....will be taken by Illegal Aliens. And, you non-Hispanic union members will get booted not only from your jobs...but also from the unions

Illegal Alien Amnesty is Anti-American Bigotry. You are an Anti-American Bigot if you support any form of Illegal Alien Amnesty. Every single Illegal Alien needs to be rounded up and deported...and take your White Guilt Liberal supporters with you

"11 million......who love this country to call it home..."

So that's the reason they fly the Mexican flag on their homes, sport it on their pickups, refuse to speak English and sign up for Welfare as soon as they arrive - they want to call this country home, Mexico, that is!

yet these aspiring citizens will boo the USA soccer team, and wave the Mexican flag over the USA's...

I love immigrants...we are a nation of immigrants...fine and dandy...

but ALL of the present citizens have been taxed into oblivion for "our" SS and "our" medicare and for our "disability" if we needed it...

its an implied contract that if we be good citizens, we can expect to have access to some money and health care when we're done working...

and now, the first thing they want to cut is SS and Medicare....the thing they'll never cut is the massive social safety net for these "aspiring " citizens...they get treated better than us...

before income taxes and Social Security taxes, immigrants could come as they please and expect nothing in return...

but since the onerous monster of taxes have been piled on us, WE THE CITIZENS have skin in the game....that should take precedence over illegals or even new immigrants...

They have been using that 11 million number for 6 or 7 years. It is all lies.
