Not terribly strong with metaphors, eh? I'll spell it out for you, and I'll try to type slowly...

The "footsoldiers" being the GOP's usual voters...
the "flag officers" being the GOPe national leadership...
"killing" meaning booting them from office...
"deserting" meaning no longer voting for them simply because they aren't (D)...
and the concept bringing back reminders of the protest marches where the Leftists suggest that soldiers kill their officers.

Better now?

I don’t know if I’ll get to vote next time around but if I do I’ll be voting a Conservative ticket, certainly not a Republican one.
