Any gun (weapon) can be considered an “assault” weapon. Weren’t flintlock muskets and Pennsylvania rifles the “assault” weapons of their day?
A .22 single shot rifle is an “assault rifle” if you kill someone with it!

My thought exactly. The features that make “assault rifles” good for assaulting no doubt make them excellent defensive weapons as well.
I could easily imagine an “assault rifle” with a high capacity magazine being a homeowner’s best friend if you had to face two or three badguys for whatever reason, which isn’t a totally crazy scenario.
I usually remind people of the Jody Foster movie “Panic Room” A team home invasion is not that uncommon.
