Yes, ignoring them is appropriate, but it is also good to spotlight the worst-offending dirtbags. As my editor at American Clarion said:
I'm a firm believer in shaming people who intentionally commit reprehensible behavior--even if they don't have the good sense to be ashamed (it's for the benefit of society's moral fabric, if nothing else)...

The only reason to be aware of what Maher and others of his ilk say is to regurgitate it back up at them when they acuse us of being hateful and racist.
