Takata cutting 50 jobs in Greensboro; impact on Kernersville operation unknown

A Japanese high-tech automobile supplier that specializes in seat belts and has another operation in Kernersville is closing its Greensboro office, eliminating 50 jobs effective Jan. 1, according to a WARN Act notice filed Friday with the N.C. Commerce Department.

TK Holdings Inc. is a subsidiary of Takata Corp. of Tokyo, Japan. Company officials could not be reached for comment today.

It is not known whether the closing affects operations of another Takata division, Highland Industries Inc., which has an airbags and textiles manufacturing plant at 215 Drummond St. in Kernersville. Charles Watson, the manager of the plant, said in April that 139 employees work in the 110,000-square-foot finishing plant.

“We have not been notified by any Highland officials that there will be any impact to the Kernersville plant,” Curtis Swisher, town manager of Kernersville, said today. The Greensboro office is at 629 Green Valley Road, Suite 210. The company has sales administrative operations there. Doesn’t seem to be related to demand, so I’m guessing this is a response to Obamacare, and they’re packing the operation up and moving it outside the US. I would expect the same kind of impact on any number of small manufacturers that popped-up in the southern states in recent years to service foreign auto makers. Look for them to pull production back to their own countries, or mainland Asia to protect their margins.
