Outsourcing and the disappearance of U.S. factory jobs were the result of what often seemed like irresistible market forces—but they were also the result of individual decisions, factory by factory, spreadsheet by spreadsheet, company by company.

And consumer by consumer, who made it profitable to outsource by buying the cheaper foreign made stuff. Now, many of THEM are unemployed and can't even afford that.

I somewhat disagree with that: I remember a time before the offshoring craze, and early on, when people complained that *suddenly* they couldn't find stuff made in the USA, or *suddenly* the quality seemed worse somehow, and *then* they put two and two together and discovered it was offshored.
