I expect a huge majority of Americans have no understanding of that simple concept and its relation to our prosperity. It’s something that should be taught if we are ever to turn away from the nanny state.

Sorry, but it's no longer taught in our school system. That is THE underlying problem. That and parents who no longer care and will give iPhones and video boxes to young children so the adults can watch "The Housewives of Who Gives a Sh*t" or "Jersey Shore" and all that inane crap.
