Microsoft is in deep trouble, their two main product lines are failing, and the blame game is intensifying. Steve Sinofsky gets the blame this time for the failure of Windows 8, but the real problem is the patterns that are so clearly illustrated by these actions.

IMO, they’ve been failing.

They are basically a company that’s just sitting there waiting to be replaced by something.

Doesn’t help that the European Union keeps beating on them, trying to get them to turn over their source codes. The USA should have put a stop to that; proprietary stuff needs to remain secret.

Same lame wall of text as the earlier posting of this.

I was a Windows fan since 3.11, then a Windows apologist after the Vista debacle. So, on a whim, I bought an iPad 3 two months ago. After a couple weeks of learning what just that iPad could do, I was amazed. If it wasn’t for MMOs, my Windows PC would be in the trash right now. I don’t use it for anything but gaming now.

I learned computers on the old black and white MACs but they were too expensive back then so I bought an IBM clone.

When my current laptops die they will be replaced by MAC machines.

It’s such an ugly UI, looks like the old Geoworks. Just a bunch of big colored squares.

And touch for everything?? I have two 30” monitors, one for the programs, the other for the palettes and toolbars, how am I supposed to use TOUCH on those??

What a disaster...

It’s not bad if you don’t mind reading more than a couple of paragraphs of text.

That’s what’s sad about America, no one wants to put the time and effort to read articles that are more than a paragraph or two long...it’s like we’ve become accustomed to slideshows and Twitter feeds.

I don’t like The Atlantic, The New Yorker, The NY Times or the LA Times, but I must say, when they write an article, it’s in-depth, heavily detailed and is often spectacular writing.

An company that forklifts their internal IT infrastructure and replaces it with Google Docs deserves what’s going to happen to them some day.

Major error on the witers part:

Office 365 doesn’t require an Office license, it GIVES you a fulll license of Office Professional Plus, for 5 separate devices per seat.

So if you have a desktop, a laptop and a tablet, you can legally run the full Office Professional plus on all of them.

Office 365 also gives you Exchange, SharePoint and Lync Online. It really is an awesome deal.

My problem was that after reading the wall of text, their argument was not a good one. What I have seen in this sort of article is a headline that 80% will agree is valid, backed by a wall of text with little or no content.

Just a personal observation from the local mall yesterday.

The mall has an Apple store that’s been there for a few years. Within the past month or two, Microsoft has opened a new “Microsoft Store” relatively close to the Apple store’s location.

The new Microsoft Store is fully TWICE the floor-space size of the Apple store. Lots of young employees in color-coordinated shirts. Very few customers.

The Apple store, on the other hand, is smaller but quite busy, full of customers...

The article is mostly crap, but they’re correct on the looming disaster of Windows 8. Hey, even blind pigs find an acorn or two occasionally.

As a Windows PC professional for the last 15 years, and someone who has been a computer programmer and systems analyst for 43 years (including an B.S. degree and an M.S. degree in computer science), my advice to anyone seeking a new Windows PC is as follows.

First, I warn everyone to avoid Windows 8 like the plague. It makes Vista look like a work of genius. The new W8 GUI is designed exclusively for credit-card sized touch-screen devices and for all practical purposes is completely unusable on mouse-driven conventional laptops and desktops. The Start Menu is gone and the conventional desktop is secondary to Metro UI. Instead, the screen is filled with a small number of giant colored blocks that point to Microsoft stores, products, or software.

I recommend you consider buying refurbished Dell Latitude laptops or Optiplex desktops with Windows 7 64-bit Professional from the Dell Business & Education portion of their Outlet. These both are business-class PCs with 3-year Dell factory warranties, and run about 30% less than the same “new” model.

Right now, Dell PCs are a good value and are relatively durable and reliable compared to most of the other brands, except the Panasonics. If you want a top of the line laptop, then go for one of the Panasonic Toughbooks. The Panasonic CF-53 is a particularly attractive laptop. Whatever you do, DO NOT buy an HP laptop. They are total junk. I’m starting to think the current crop of Toshiba laptops might not be much better.

Replaced by what? I'm looking forward to the quantum computer but I may not live that long.
Something big must be invented to rattle the world market with a hugh ""WOW"" factor.

It cannot be forced. Much like the Gov outlawing oil for an alternative that doesn't exist.

Oh, and I just upgraded my p-uter to Win7 Pro two days ago.
I had to because the new 32gb 4x8-2133 Ram is finally affordable,
and Home Premium only handles 16gb.

I'm a Linux user and admin so no recent experience at all with Microsoft OS products.

But are you saying that even after switching to the conventional desktop that conventional laptops and desktops are not usable with W8?

I find that hard to believe. Mouse gestures and buttons are simply not supported???

Why would Windows 8 even allow itself to be installed on a device that did not have the pointing controls it required?

Not saying I've seen anything particularly likeable about the product but a summary incompatibility with an entire world of legacy devices seems unlikely to me.

“But are you saying that even after switching to the conventional desktop that conventional laptops and desktops are not usable with W8?”

Correct. No Start Menu on conventional desktop, running the mouse into various corners and sides of the screen cause various popout menus to appear, and some of those hiddend and fateful mouse positions and various other activities can cause the conventional desktop to be repeatedly replaced with the useless Metro UI.

“Not saying I’ve seen anything particularly likeable about the product but a summary incompatibility with an entire world of legacy devices seems unlikely to me.”

Yes, one would think that would be unlikely, but that is exactly what MS did. Try googling: Windows 8 D, and see what the google suggestions are, follow a few and count the number of google hits.
