Beginning in the 8th century with the Muslim conquest, Spain /Hispania/alAndulusia lost its Celtic and Germanic ideals of individual liberty and its Roman ideals of republican govt. In its place the idea of the caudillo/alcalde/strongman form of govt arose, fed by the Islamic caliphate. When the reconquista ended this political direction was married to the new idea of nation state and the right of divine absolutism. The role of the Catholic Church exacerbated these political assaults on liberty. Now 500+ years later when you look at hispanic political culture worldwide you see no love of liberty but a great popular investment in the strongman govt who panders to the masses. The idea of an hispanic culture creating and sustaining a successful democratic republic with individual liberty as its core is unlikely. hence the affinity of Hispanic Americans for liberal democrat ideas of big govt and statism.
Exactly.
