Pierce Manufacturing begins its Bradenton layoffs

BRADENTON -- Workers targeted in the area's largest single round of layoffs in more than a decade have begun this month to hit the unemployment rolls.

The first wave of job cuts in what will eventually grow to 325 are now underway at Pierce Manufacturing in Bradenton, an Oshkosh subsidiary that earlier this year announced plans to discontinue its ambulance line just 18 months after the operation was moved to Florida.

The maker of emergency response vehicles has let go some of its contracted workers in a process that will continue through early next year with many full-time laborers when all of the remaining ambulance orders have been met. The company plans to keep its fire truck business operating in Bradenton.

"It's going to be a gradually type of layoff," said John Daggett, vice president of communications for Oshkosh. "It will be fluid. It all depends on the back orders in the system."

Many contracted employees who had been working at the Pierce facility have been let go. Other full-time workers, already given warning of a pick slip, have quit voluntarily to get a head start on their job hunt.

Most of the 240 full-time Pierce workers still awaiting their jobless fate will gradually begin to fall from company payrolls from Jan. 10 through June 2013...

ObamaCare won't mean an upsurge in the ambulance business?

Perhaps they should take a cue from the British and roll out a line of stacking ambulances. They could be lifted by a crane and stacked three or four high out front of the emergency room until there is room inside. Maybe they can outfit them with TV’s that will allow the patient to watch Jerry Springer and all of the Judge shows, maybe even a little flower box so that they’ll feel right at home.

Sarcasm aside, this is a company that makes fire apparatus. It is a very specialized field, one that has few competitors and few customers. It would not take much to push a company like Pierce into bankruptcy. Not only would jobs disappear, but the important skills that come to bear in manufacturing this type of equipment are quickly lost, to all of our detriment.

FTA: "It's going to be a gradually type of layoff," said John Daggett, vice president of communications for Oshkosh.

I think I've identified another savings opportunity for the company.

Does getting gradually fired ease the pain?

This is sickening afer the ambulances are made, than the employees will get the ax. I drive by the Pierce Manufacturing Business in Oshkosh at least once a month. Many of the Pierce Fire Trucks that are manufactured and are on display have (Brazil) and (Argentia) City Names on the fire trucks. the Oshkosh cement mixer plant has fewer trucks sitting around to be completed. I will have to take a drive to Milwaukee soon, will take a look at Harnshfeger (sp ?), see what tha plant looks like. maybe take a drive to Horicon and Beaver Dam to check out John Deere too.

maybe I should I check out Ariens in Brillion too (ariens, gravely, snapper and simplicity). No I will not check out MTD in Cleveland. Lawn equipment manufacturers
