About 25% of Americans identify themselves as “Catholic”, and they are counted as such when polled. However, only a certain percentage — perhaps, say, 30% — are currently Catholic in any meaningful way. I know people who haven't gone to church (other than for weddings, funerals, etc) since their First Communions thirty years ago, yet they describe themselves on forms and to pollsters as “Catholic”.

I am a practicing Catholic who has been exasperated by the Catholic bishops’ knee-jerk political liberalism (except for abortion), yet even I don't blame the Catholic Church for the Catholics who helped elect Obama. I'd say 90% of the Catholics I know who go to church every week or almost every week voted for Romney. Of the Catholics I know who go about once a month and on Christmas and Easter, about 70% voted for Romney. As for all those Catholics who never go to church...they are not Catholic; they are “Catholic” and I'd bet 90% of them voted for Obama.

If the Catholic clergy started excommunicating its Democrat politician "members" I'd give serious thought to converting.

But if they are totally on board with the entire Obama agenda except for that one paragraph about abortion and contraception, I have no time for them.
