Women tend to vote for security. The welfare state provides that security. Even middle-class career women want the welfare state, because they don't want poor women desperately competing with them for the good men.

My wife always gets mad when I say that but then I remind her we'd never would have had to endure the likes of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton or Obama had they left the voting to us menfolk. Women vote with their hearts and men vote with their minds.
