What Team Romney Could Learn from Red Five

Star Wars fans still grip their chairs when Luke and the rebel fighters hurtle down the Death Star trenches amidst deathly fire from the Empire’s incoming. As ships are vaporized and Vader hones in on them, Red Five exhorts everyone to:

Stay on Target. Stay on Target.

Dear Romney-Ryan Campaign, you must learn from Red Five.

The “Target” of any good campaign is The Plan. Every moment of campaign communication should focus on a unique message, “Here are the problems and this is our plan.” Everything else is empty space.

Yesterday Vice President Joe Biden somehow acquired, in place of his normal accent, the drawl of a Southern good ol’ boy and insulted his audience by suggesting that in a Romney-Ryan presidency plantations would reemerge and:

They’re goin’ to put y’all back in chains.

What should be the response to this silliness from Mitt Romney? The Plan. No matter how ridiculous the other candidate, no matter how insulting or dishonest they become, their ineptitude as leaders does not provide voters with a substantive reason to let your candidate lead.

In the case of Joe Biden, instead of pulling out the “my opponent has reached a new low,” sleeping pill platitude, the Romney campaign should point out quickly that,

Oh, we all know that’s just crazy Joe Biden running his mouth again. Nobody takes anything he says seriously.

Why? Because it is true. And dismissing him as the less-than-articulate, less than intelligent person he is will prove far more effective than taking him seriously.

Then, “Stay on Target.”

In a campaign you can communicate your constructive plan, or you can cat-fight. Nothing will stick to a candidate who wants to have an adult conversation about substantive objective solutions. And the more you “Stay on Target,” the more frustrated the voters will become with your opponent who has no plan, no positive ideas for solving problems and can only make outrageous statements about you.

Joe Biden being a melodramatic dotard is expected. His latest proof that Obama surrounds himself with stupid people should be acknowledged, shooed away like an annoying fly and then dismissed so your candidate can, “Stay on Target.”

Joe Biden’s IQ is not your message, The Plan is your message. People want solutions. If you passionately focus on your solutions you’ll accomplish far more than by posturing outrage and wasting the voters’ time on non-substantial side-shows like Biden’s latest forray into outer-space.

“Stay on Target. Stay on Target.”

Uh, Red 5 was Luke. I hang with Red 2 (Wedge Antilles-—the real hero of the rebellion!)

Romney and Ryan should hold their fire on Biden until Biden is renominated.
Then everytime Biden’s name comes up he should be marginalized. They should not sauy anything directly insulting jusrt treat Biden as a minor distraction.
“Oh, you can't take him seriously”
“There goes Joe off the rails again”
“”hard to believe that he got through college. Did anyone see his transcript?”
Just keep tagging Biden as not smart and unreliable.
Point out how often he has disagreed with the president.

Thank you so much! I anticipate hate mail over this! But yes, it was Gold Five who said, “Stay on Target.” I guess I should wear the cone of shame.

But thank you so much!

:)

Ummm... W stayed "on target" and look where that got him.

When the left starts throwing out their garbage and you don't respond, they win by default.

Staying on target in your message is one thing - not responding to attacks is another.

Redd Foxx: You hear that Elizabeth? I’m coming to join you, and I’m bringin’ a 5th of Ripple. (Glug, Glug) Well, maybe not quite a 5th.
