I’m sick to death of people equating vanilla with bland, generic, or unexceptional. Vanilla is tasty, damnit! Just because it works well as a base and jumping off point for more complex flavors doesn’t mean it’s not a flavor itself. So far as ice cream is concerned, chocolate is nearly as much a jumping off point as is vanilla. You don’t often see people eating plain chocolate, is what I’m saying, or at least much more often than plain vanilla.

Many years ago, when I was a kid, I went with my dad into Reed’s Ice Cream in Des Moines. They sold hand packed ice cream. Dad ordered a quart of Vanilla...the clerk behind the counter responded with...’What flavor?’
Guess it has always been that way. :)
