Lots of people with wells and pump houses use light bulb heat to keep pipes from freezing
Yes, and just like the chicken farmer who used incandescent bulbs for heat for young chicks, there are MUCH better options for wells, pump houses and yes, even young chicks. Even in 1974 we stopped using household bulbs (incandescent) for keeping the chicks warm, switching to specialized heat bulbs. Wells and pump houses are also much better served by a dedicated heat source with a thermostat. In the long run it is also cheaper to spend the money for the correct heat source.
As far as the “ban” on incandescent bulbs, I’m 100% against it. This is because they don’t last as advertised nor do they appear to save energy.
I’ve spent a small fortune on the “new” CFL bulbs as the old ones burned out. Most of the CFL’s I purchased are warrantied for 7 to 9 years. So far I’ve had 1 start a fire within 3 months of purchase, 8 fail in less than 1 1/2 years and 3 more failed before hitting the 2 year mark.
I just purchased an Energy Use Meter for individual appliances, I am going to measure actual electrical use in a table lamp using a CFL bulb vs. incandescent because after replacing nearly 35 bulbs (6 were 100 watt all turned on by one switch in the garage)my electricity bill certainly has not reflected the savings I was told we would gain by switching
