I can’t believe there are people who think going into a space is a silly idea. What a devolved civilization this country has become.

To me it’s a national security issue.

The first people with something functioning on the moon will be able to build much larger and more powerful space vehicles, manned or unmanned. The space station is tiny and it’s “international” in the worst sense.

It’s pretty easy to send unmanned vehicles to the moon with parts for larger vehicles that cannot escape the Earth’s gravity. Either we’re going to do it, the Russians will do it, the Chinese will do it or the Indians will do it.

I say we do it. There’s just too much to be gained in terms of materials to walk away from this idea.

It cost Apollo 135 billion to deliver 50 tons to the moon. A manned space station would need about 500 tons to make it viable. You got a trllion dollars lying around just to deliver the payload?

The moon has water.

It is heavy.

It is a vital resource.

It is out of Earth’s gravity well.

Hydrogen + Oxygen = rocket propellant and drinking and breathing.

We will learn how to mine resources in space.

I love space exploration and expanding scientific frontiers. I even applaud some public moneys into NASA but would prefer most coming from the private sector (sorry, i am getting so sick of that phrase).

But at a time like this? No. The reason Gingrich is out front is because we want a fighter to win the election, not because we want a megalomaniac dreamer.

Santorum is right; Newt’s grandiose ideas are out of touch with america’s current economic situation. He’s in Florida. He’s sharing one of his fantasies to cheer them up. A steady hand line Santorum’s would do us better right now. Promise the moon later.

Santorum needs to just get out and give up his dream to be Myth’s VP.

He doesn’t need Santorum to do anything but stay in and give it to Mittens.

Take a minute and learn about what Newt said and what is on the line before casting this aside.

Santorum would get out if he thought it would make a huge difference, I am sure. The truth is that with the way the votes rolled out in SC, perry didn’t need to leave the race.

And Santorum doesn’t have to leave before FL. He won one of the first three contests. This race is volatile. Look at what happened to Cain; Newt has more “stuff” out there than Cain had. What if he implodes? You will be glad to have Santorum. Remember how new your love of Newt is. It diminishes Santorum not one whit, nor does it hurt Newt, to have Santorum in the race now.

I’m not casting moon stations aside. I like big ideas. I agree that the USA should be biggest in these things because we are the most benign. It hurts to think of the Chinese or Russians having that advantage.

But you can’t get back to our glory days by pulling the covers over our heads. You can’t talk magic about exciting progress and think that good feeling of nostalgia wipes our debt and bad economy away. Californians voted for that bullet train by imagining happy people zooming from LA to SF, and all the prosperity promised therefrom. Now they find that it will cost 4x more than thought, and go between little mid CA towns only, for the next decade. We want to vote the whole crazy boondoggle back out now because we are broke.

I want to get us to a place where we can move forward in space exploration. Do you really think we are ready? What if Obama had proposed it?
