Rick Santorum got a huge lift Saturday when a gathering of 150 prominent religious conservatives in Brenham, Texas, designated him as their consensus choice. It is noteworthy that Gary Bauer, among the most prominent of the social conservatives, had endorsed Santorum and was in attendance at the meeting. Coming a week before the South Carolina primary and just as Newt Gingrich has drawn the ire of conservatives for his anti-Bain attacks, the vote may have come in the nick of time. (One wonders what would have happened if the religious leaders had picked Santorum before the New Hampshire primary.)

Tony Perkins, the president of the Family Research Council and a spokesman for the group of 150 activists, said that a “strong consensus” emerged for the former Pennsylvania senator after a three-ballot process.
Perkins said that Santorum got more than two-thirds support from the activists in the final ballot, in which he faced off against former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. Gov. Rick Perry of Texas also received considerable support from the group, Perkins added.
“I think it was vigorous discussion of who they felt best represented the conservative movement and who they think had the best chance of succeeding,” said Perkins, adding that he was surprised that the group was able to coalesce around one candidate.
In South Carolina Santorum has been stuck in a scrum of not-Romney candidates in a state in which he needs not to win but to distinguish himself as the only reasonable alternative to Mitt Romney.
But he hadn’t yet shaken off Rep. Ron Paul (R-Tex.) or Newt Gingrich. Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Rick Perry chugs along, taking about 10 percent of the voters, who are precisely the type of conservatives whom Santorum needs...

Santorum needs to put out an ad “The Defense Rests” about Romney’s complete inability to defend himself against Obabama.
Right now his only defense with Bain has been WAAAH! No fair. Does Mitt really think any of those news flunkies will cry foul once Obama comes after him? He says he expected this but not from Republicans? Seriously? He expected it and yet this is the best he can do?
We’re toast if Mitt gets in, they’ll run over him and his only defense will be “Foul - low blow”. Wake up SC, there’s still time.
I do hope that this succeeds. Maybe Santorum can appeal to the old Buchanan Brigades of the 1990’s and get their support. Also, perhaps there are Catholic neighborhoods in parts of Couth Carolina.
Jennifer Rubin has jumped the shark in my opinion. She has no intergrity left IMHO.

What I found notable is that Ron Paul looks like a “bad guy”, while he is the only one who identifies the problem. Spending is the tax. It does not really matter if the government gets it from the paychecks, excise taxes, sales taxes, from devaluation of dollars or from borrowing from the next generation.
So at this point, when a candidates are talking about their tax plans and not about spending cuts, they are not really serious...
Some emphasize it more than others (Paul and Perry) Others should make it a bigger issue. Overspending by the government is the issue that gave us 2010 win...
I’m with you on that—deficit spending is absolutely a silent, indirect tax because of the resultant inflation and consequent weakening of the dollar.
Paul, Newt, Perry, and Santorum have all offered serious spending reduction plans AFAIK. Check their websites, I’m sure the details are there.
