This reminds me of Stalinist Russia. Often when Stalin approached to podium to give a speech the applause would go on for 20 minutes up to a half hour. Why? Because nobody wanted to be the first one to stop clapping. Experience had shown that often the first person to stop clapping would never be seen or heard from again.
