$0.70 or so each at Wallyworld. Agree with everything else.

If this and other nutrition-deficient (but calorie-dense) foods are to be anyone’s mainstay, make sure to have a plentiful supply of multivitamins.

I always encourage people to buy seeds. I also encourage people to test those seeds. Every location and gardening style is different, and what grows well for one person might not work for another. So, buy seeds for things you’ll eat, and test them. If that variety doesn’t work for you, chances are there’s another that will.

When you find varieties that grow well for you, and that you know you’ll eat, then it’s time to learn how to save seeds. That way you won’t need to buy that variety anymore. There are lots of books and online guides on that subject.

It’s also a good idea to learn a few different ways of preserving your harvest. Canning tomatoes is easy, and gives you sauces all year long. And some foods can be stored for months without any processing at all. I still have some of last year’s squash, just sitting in wooden tubs in the basement.

I didn’t notice the dates on this thread until I saw a comment from Johnny.

This very post gets re-posted periodically (not by me, quite obviously). Many people read it (as evidenced by the large number of comments), and many people (myself included) like to comment because we know that at least a few who haven’t read it before will do so this time. We, like the guy who re-posts it, are simply trying to contribute some knowledge to those here on FR.

Why should that be a problem?

The most important thing to do is figure out who the idiots are in your life—and get them out of your life!

It only takes one idiot to turn the best plan into a disaster.
