Is Rick Perry the Iowa Dark Horse?
The Atlantic ^ | December 31, 2011 | Molly Ball

Posted on 12/31/2011 4:20:30 PM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

....... Perry is still the affable governor of Texas, and voters still want to like him, which has become easier since he's mostly stopped screwing up all the time...

...He tells the crowd that the small towns of Iowa are just like the small towns of Texas, where he grew up: "The same people, the same values."

As the days to the caucuses wane, Perry has things other candidates would kill for: Crowds who want to meet him, ads all over the airwaves, a decent ground organization, an anti-Washington message people are hungry for, and terrific hair. The question is whether it's too little, too late, to get through the crowded pack ahead of him.

Several Perry-inclined voters in Boone said they were former Herman Cain supporters, which helps explain Perry's uptick.

Marti Melton-Streeter, the former GOP chairwoman in Boone County, said she couldn't support Romney because of his health-care record, and she's frightened by Ron Paul's foreign policy views. Perry, she recently decided, deserves a second chance with voters.

"I'd really like to see Rick Perry come out of Iowa. I think he needs that opportunity on the national level," she said. "I know there have been missteps along the way, but his philosophy is what we need in a candidate."

Carolyn Erickson, an 81-year-old from Ogden, thought she'd made up her mind to support Romney, but Perry changed her mind.

"I was what you call impressed" with Romney when she saw him Thursday, she said. "Today, I'm excited. I feel a passion for [Perry]."

But at least one audience member experienced a different conversion. Loren Nalean, 61, a Boone attorney, said Perry convinced him to caucus -- for Romney.

"I just think he's more intelligent and more sophisticated than Governor Perry," he said.

Well, it seems we have a new crop of people who decide to come on to Perry threads and spread crap. You and the Yankee need a new hobby.

You do realize you just made an idiotic statement, don’t you?

I know several people have probably pointed it out to you already.

Perry is the one WITH the organization, with the plan and with the money.

Only Romney can say that except that his plan is one we don’t like.

I’ve noticed the Perry attacks have amped back up the past few days - Perry must be doing well!

I totally agree with you. People are still whining about the corridor but I thought it was a good plan.

We needed it. We didn’t have the money to build it. The feds wouldn’t help. Someone else offered to do it; they would have wanted to be repaid in the form of tolls.

But we would have had a fantastic and sorely needed road.

It was visionary, but people were whining about everything about it. They would lose a couple of acres of THEIR land.

They acted like this never happened. We wouldn’t have any roads, airports, railroads etc. without taking some private land here and there. The people are well compensated.

Oh, wait, why am I talking about this. Nobody cares.

Remember the glory days?

All Cincinatus’ Wife or shield would have to do is post a Perry thread and people would come from far and wide to post nasty comments.

It was a weird thing which I still don’t understand. They even had a ping list to summon them over to Perry threads.

Those people are all gone now. They’ve faded into the mist and I, for one, don’t miss them.

But we have a few new contenders. They have much to live up to, but they’re trying.

Why does Perry attract so much fear and hate? (only from a few)?

Remember the glory days?

I sure do. They went away when their candidate "suspended" his campaign...then they glommed on Newt...now they're turning to Santorum.

There are new ones these days.

Perry is the only conservative that can win - he has the money and organization to go further than the other conservatives. I think it's getting close to a time when conservatives are going to have to unite behind the one that can actually win.

Really annoy the RNC. Vote for Perry. He wants to cut their hours and paychecks.

I was born at night, but not last night.

The Constitution grants no such powers to the Executive Branch over the Legislative Branch to the Executive Branch.

As if Congress, any Congress, Republican or Democrat would vote to relinquish their power, perks and pay.

Nor should we want them to. We have a nascent dictator in the Oval Office now, attempting to circumvent the Congress. Imagine Obama with a weaker House and Senate. As it stands now they're having to gavel the House in session once every few days to stop the Senate from adjourning so as to prevent Der Schwarze Führer from going hog wild making recess appointments.

It's all campaign bluster, or as Daniel Patrick Moynihan once famously put it "Boob bait for the Bubbas".

Perry doesn't even believe that nonsense unless he's a fool.

Happy New Year to you and God Bless us all.

RE :"A very late entry for post of the year!! ;)"

The Newt-mania made me think that maybe Perry wasn't all that bad. If Newt is our last hope we are surely screwed.
