On Norway’s Soft-On-Crime Hotel Prison Culture

Will the self-confessed killer, Breivik, be housed in the luxurious Halden prison?

Norway’s soft-on-crime culture embraces, hotel-style prisons where violent offenders are “mothered.” From the Mail Online:

Luxury: Every private cell has a mini-fridge, flat-screen TV and even a private en-suite bathroom and barless windows to let in more sunlight… If only Breivik was fathered. Or policed. From The Telegraph:

Their [father-son] relationship broke down when Breivik was a teenager and his behaviour became more unruly and rebellious. A keen fan of hip-hop music, he would spend his evenings with a small gang of friends spraying graffiti on buildings around Oslo.

From The Telegraph again:

Halden Fengsel prison was opened last by King Harald V and is home to some of Norway’s most hardened criminals, including murderers and rapists.

[…]

Guards move around the prison unarmed and often play sports or eat meals with the men they are tasked with watching. Half of the prison staff are women, a policy based on research which shows a female presence induces a less aggressive atmosphere.

Granted, soft-on-crime Norwegians have a tough side. Currently:

The self-confessed killer has...been banned from reading newspapers or watching broadcast news.

One of the symptoms of a FAILED STATE is it has no way of dealing with mass murderers.

This guy is going to get the maximum sentence (possibly), and that's only 21 years, but he will also be a model prisoner ~ that little highly stylized SS goatee of his tells us that ~ he will be a good little Nazi ~ and he'll get time off for good behavior.

Still like to know who owned that car he loaded with high explosives and where it was parked through the day until it was moved to the "sidewalk" ~ that's a pretty EXCLUSIVE AREA ~ kind of like parking next door to the US Capitol Building!

He has "friends" on high!

How do their crime and particularly recidivism rates compare?

Within two years of their release, 20% of Norway's prisoners end up back in jail. In the U.K. and the U.S., the figure hovers between 50% and 60%. Of course, a low level of criminality gives Norway a massive advantage. Its prison roll lists a mere 3,300, or 69 per 100,000 people, compared with 2.3 million in the U.S., or 753 per 100,000 — the highest rate in the world.

We have the most people in prison and the highest amount per capita. I wouldn't assume we're doing a better job in this department...

Crime rates in America tend strongly to follow the demographic growth and retreat of young men between 16 and 30.

That happens in most other countries as well, but the various bumps and troughs occur to different degrees in different years.

Here in Virginia we have also found that you can counsel the most violent populations with a separate special penalty ON TOP OF whatever other penalty they are getting for using a gun in the commission of a crime.

That pretty much cut our murder rate in half!

In addition we eliminated parole. Only those imprisoned before that elimination are eligible for it.

That keeps the most criminal part of the age demographic in prison until they get past the urge (although there are exceptions).

Norways penal theory is totally alien ~ and will get a real workout now that they've begun importing large numbers of young men who believe women walking alone are available to be raped.

I have no idea why the Norwegian government did that unless they are all insane themselves.
