Coming from a broken home, he grew up and graduated from Columbia University and went on to earn a law degree at Harvard. Both schools are amongst the most challenging to get into in the country. Not only that, he was an editor of the Harvard Law Review and taught at the University of Chicago law school.

Do we know if any of this is factual outside of the teaching gig?

Even the teaching gig is questionable. They say he taught Constitutional law, but others say he was a guest teacher who taught the Alinski method.
No one ever vetted the guy for the truth. From what others claim, he was bought and paid for by the Saudis ( this I believe) when he was young. They carried him all the way. Financial donations from the Saudis can get a person into places he normally couldn't get into alone.
