Does this seem to you to be a new journalistic low?

Does this seem to you to be a new journalistic low?

Posted on by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

I haven’t ever heard of anything like this, except in my sometime-interest in astronomy, when people were recruited to monitor big listening arrays or perhaps help map the genome.

The Washington Post has asked for 100 volunteer readers to go through some 24K emails from Gov. Sarah Palin’s tenure as Governor of Alaska.

Can we imagine they are looking for the good things she did as Governor with the purpose of praising her?  Surely there will be some.  If they find those things will they report them?  Do we expect stories about how, as Governor, she – say – helped a vet get a new wheelchair?

My initial reaction is one of contempt.  And I am pretty sure I would have the same reaction were this about a politician whose career I find loathsome, such as an aggressively pro-abortion “catholic”.

Enlist volunteers for this?

Does this seem to you to be a weird journalistic low?  Am I wrong?

Thanks very much dearest vox_freedom.

Fr. Z is not wrong. He's spot on. God bless him and God bless you, dearest vox.

May God bless and protect Sarah Palin and her precious family and all of her supporters.

We resolutely fight on!

Yes, I agree. Even if I didn’t like a candidate, I’d think it was a little weird that a newspaper should be appealing to its readers as an unpaid staff to attack the political candidate by reading his or her official e-mails.

I don’t have any issues with them wanting people to go through the stuff. They’ll quietly drop it as soon as they realize people are learning good things.

I am sure they, as well as ABC/CBS/CNN/MSNBC/NBC/NPR and the New York slimes did the same thing with regard to Mr. Obama in 2009. Only, they buried everything they found in his case, lest some it actually get out.

This is not new, they have been doing it all along. They just can’t afford it anymore so they’re trying it Huffington Puffington style.

I don’t have any issues with them wanting people to go through the stuff.

The sheer arrogance is the issue. Not that long ago, say five years, a media outlet would say, "Are you following the e-mail releases? If so, let us know what you think as you read them..."

The thinnest veneer of objectiveism has now been spit on, tossed out and trampled. The leftist media doesn't care that people now know that they hate us.

I do have a problem with your no problem.

The slimey libs go crazy when anyone starts bring clarity and truth to what is happening to our once great Country, and Palin has them all in a twitter.

If the WP had spent five minutes searching O's mysterious lack of background from birth through so called education, I would feel differently.

That’s why the rush to get dirt on Gov. Palin.

I believe Fr. Z makes an excellent point.

Don’t know if it’s a new low because of past actions by the enemedia but this will rank down there with the lowest.

“Journalistic Low?” Isn’t that what’s called a pleonasm? Like wet water, free gift, or more bigger?

How about Alaska State Senator Hollis French, chair of "Troopergate" who, while investigating on behalf of Monaghan and taking part in the Obama campaign, promised to deliver "Governor Palin's head on a silver platter"......../????

Will Washpost file a FOIA for HIS emails??????.

Of course not.
