She left the governorship to get out of the kill-zone exploited by Dem operatives, to sue her and her family to the point of personally destroying them, and colluding with an Obama-fellating press to ILLEGALLY leak details of the suits while in progress; such suits being over such innocuous things as her husband wearing a logo jacket while competing, lunch reimbursments for her children while on intrastate travel across Alaska, and her having a legal defense fund.
All of which had to be paid for out of her pocket.
So she sidestepped them, and continued to press forward -- garnering two New York Times bestsellers (how many other unsuccessful VP candidates, who had just resigned a state position, have ever done that, capped with a succesful nationwide book tour?) -- and then garnered favorable publicity -- not having to pay for it -- not having to drain funds advertising it -- but instead arranging to be paid FOR it -- "Sarah Palin's Alaska".
It humanized her after the thumping and was a commercial success for its cable channel.

I think Palin is the best-qualified of the entire GOP field: she has extensive experience in the energy field, has served at the executive level of a state, and has worked with large corporations AND fought off personal attacks, as well as going through a campaign;
AND has the best chance to defeat the Bamster (If she has no prayer of winning, why are there three or four "tell-all" hit pieces coming from the leftist attack-squads later this month? Nobody wrote "tell-all" pieces on Quayle after his administration AS the VP, but they are about Sarah when she isn't even a declared candidate yet.

AND has the best chance by experience and temperament to drain the fever swamp that is DC, currently inhabited by the RINO-DONK axis.
