Chris Dodd, BILL CLINTON, and AL GORE also come to mind. Not to mention Hillary Clinton. All overweight, if not obese. And Arnold Schwartzenegger weighed something like 290lbs. at his peak when he was Mr. Universe (but he wasn't FAT)

I'm responding to your post, because I've heard that European and Asian women love our soldiers because they are muscular he-men compared to what they are used to.

There are parts of this article that are way off base, but it seems like some people commenting are more than a little defensive. The reality is that Americans on the average are getting fatter every year and it is not healthy. It has certainly happened to me, my family and my friends.

Recently we were doing a prefire plan at a local high school and they had pictures of the kids for the last fifty or so years going down one of the hallways. I was privately shocked at how progressively homelier the kids have become. At first I wasn't sure what made it seem that way; this was a Catholic School so the kids didn't have a lot of outrageous hair or makeup. Then I realized it was because most of the kids were obese... at least by the standards when I went to school over thirty years ago.

I work as a firefighter and I would have to say that a very high percentage of the people we see with chronic health problems are very fat. Most of their problems are directly related to their weight. Just because the First Wookie has seized on this problem doesn't mean it is a leftist issue.

This may be a stupidly written article, but Americans are getting fatter and fatter. I have an uncle who has had both hips and both knees replaced twice. Fortunately he hasn't had a stroke or heart attack because he has very high blood pressure. He is a super nice conservative guy, but he weighs 400 lbs and rides around on one of those four wheeled scooters. Check out the people who are parking up front in the handy-capped spots... most of the time they aren't really old or truly handy-capped... they are generally just super fat.

I blame the super large portions at restaurants and fast food places. I also blame all of the computers, video games, and 100s of high definition TV Channels and other video options. Then there is the Atkins diet... the first choice of most fat people when they want to lose weight. Common sense should tell everyone that this is an unhealthy diet which will cause a lot of health problems but we see overweight people everyday with super high blood pressure who say they are dieting despite eating a couple pounds of bacon a day.

I blame Personal Responsibility.
In other words, I don't blame anybody.

You make your bed and then you lie in it. When somebody puts a gun to someone Else’s head and forces them to eat five Fatburgers, I blame the guy with the gun.

I feel pity for people who lack self control. My Father was / is an Alcoholic. He quit drinking at age 78. He is 88 now. No amount of begging him to quit made a dent. He did it on his own. He goes to AA meetings almost every day.

That being said, Alcoholics say they are suffering from a Disease, just like Obese people say. It isn't a Disease, it is lack of Self Control. You do it to yourself and you own it.

I spent my entire life with a Father hooked on Alcohol and a Mother hooked on Cigarettes. All I saw was weakness. I suppose that makes me a bad guy, but I lived it and came to that conclusion.

Sorry about the rant, but I have no patience for making excuses for other people's behavior.

BMI is bogus. It is based on the “norm” having no real muscle mass.
I am at 9% body fat and, according to BMI, considered obese.

I can think of a lot of adjectives for
Moochelle, but “svelte” is not one of them.

Moochelle?

The average obese person costs society more than $7,000 a year in lost productivity and added medical treatment

It seems to me I have been paying taxes all my life and paying for health insurance with my employers or by myself. I have been supporting the folks that would condemn me now, while they steal from me and my fellow citizens. Anyone that has health insurance or pays their medical bills pays for the poor's healthcare and the healthcare of foreign nationals in our nation illegally. I am sick of the self righteous snobs and their attitude.

"The person’s weight has’t changed, just the govt standards. Those changes had to increase the ‘obese’ population by at least 10%."

This is exactly where the increasing "epidemic" of obesity is coming from.

hee hee. My fat neighbor nags the heck out of her husband for smoking. It is so unhealthy, etc. Now the fattie gets it in the shorts.

Really, how disgusting that our society have turned into such rude and self righteous health nazis. The self righteous can not beleive they will be next.

“I blame Personal Responsibility.

I couldn't agree with you more. No apologies needed about your rant... that's really what my post was also. I go to ten calls a day sometimes with these overweight people who are literally the biggest victims you can imagine. One time we went to a person who had been stuck in her tub for two days because she was so fat she couldn't get out of it. Their home was filled with inches dog poop because both of the people living there were to fat to bend over and pick up their dogs’ feces. We had to shovel a path through their house to make it a little less messy to drag her down the hallway on a tarp.

And how about all these idiotic lawyer warnings that are plastered on everything? I uploaded some videos I made to Youtube showing how to disassemble certain firearms and reload cartridges etc. For my own legal protection I tell people in three different ways (verbally, in the videos description, and in little pop-ups annotations that show up in the video) to make sure that their gun is unloaded before they start. I still get these Youtube safety Nazis telling me I am not doing enough to warn people... Shouldn't common sense be enough to keep people from fooling with a loaded gun? Will one more warning really help the absent minded?

I cannot imagine walking the door of someones house and seeing what you have seen. I don't think I could handle it.

I know this might sound stupid, but it seems that people nowadays have no sense of shame. We give people on Food Stamps a Debit Card so they aren't embarrassed getting their free food. We don't drug test people who get Public Assistance because it would just make the poor things feel worse, yeah right.

You have my up most respect for doing what you do.

Just a quick story. I have an elderly Aunt I look after. She lost her eyesight to Glaucoma when she was in her early 20’s. She lives by herself and she always does her own housework, even though we have a lady come in every couple of weeks to do the major cleaning. If anyone comes over and notices crumbs on the counter or a piece of paper that my Aunt might have dropped on the floor, my Aunt is embarrassed.

I always tell her she is too hard on herself, but then I realize that this is the same woman that worked in a clothing sweat shop in Brooklyn sitting at a sewing machine after she lost her sight. After the place closed down, my Father, who didn't have a pot to piss in at the time, had to FORCE my Aunt to go to the Welfare Office to get a $10 a week check. She thought it was too embarrassing to be on the dole, even if she only collected for about six months. She couldn't wait to find work and stop taking the money.

Just another reason I hate the victim crap we are fed every day from the Liberal Press and the Democrat Party. My Aunt has never been a victim, even though she has had every right to be. I don't entertain whiners. My Parents taught me that you help people that can't help themselves, not people that won't help themselves.

Second rant off. Thanks for coming. LOL

Oh jeez, this article.

Fat-mongering combined with radical feminism (and this is a male writer), yay.

Are people really so fat? Is this “crisis” real? I definitely wouldn’t say 70%! of the men and 50% of the women that I see around town are overweight.
