When American's being able to communicate is considered a "national emergency"

I'm amazed at how little attention was given to the fact that Obama has been seeking the power to shut down the Internet in the event of a "national emergency". I mean, the legislation was propounded before the uprisings in Egypt and Libya occurred and it is amazing how the dictators in those countries attempted the SAME EXACT thing. However, it is noteworthy that those dictators were actually emulating Obama because he made his move before the middle-east uprisings beginning with Egypt.

It's quite shameful that the media barely made a peep when this would-be dictator obama attempted to promulgate this. Has anyone bothered to ask WHAT kind of "national emergency" would actually BENEFIT Americans by shutting down their ability to communicate (the way they did shortly after obama's election in forming the "tea parties"? Anyone ask the question?

The obvious conclusion to be drawn from this act of effrontery is that this would-be dictator, OUR "Last King of Scottland" should not have been impeached for this but rather extradited (at least).

The main point of The CB Patriot Project is to develop a plan so that patriotic Americans will be prepared when something happens and suddenly find themselves unable to communicate with one another. ISOLATION is what the left need in order to prevent what happened after the first economic meltdown occurred in 2007-2008.

The tea parties probably would never have occured to the extent they did without the Internet. They know that. That's why it is important to have a plan BEFORE it hits the fan. To sign up, go to the cbPatriot.com site

I think this plan

I think if they/he "shut down the Internet" it would be something of a charade. He/they would have to stay within the confines of their pretense.

The pretense is that there was a "cyber-terror" incident and either the terrorists supposedly did something and they have to shut it down in order to investigate or they shut it down in order to "protect"it or "protect" us... all while still somewhat constrained by congress (one would hope).

So the agenda would be to stifle most of the communication under those pretenses. I don't see them coming out and making a law specifically elucidating their leftist agenda of disabling the freedom of American to gather and protest, specifically conservative Americans as they gathered after the last meltdown.

Ten years ago I would have thought this stuff was of the "tin-foil hat" genre. However, the fact that this administration has been attempting to promulgate this repugnant legislation, reveals anyone who treats the subject with reproach or disdain is chosing to be willfully ignorant.

It’s only “trampling on our civil rights” and “removing our freedoms” when George Bush does it...

Here is a middle-tech (as compared to high tech) option: http://www.amazon.com/Guide-Bypass-Blocked-Websites-ebook/dp/B003XVYGRG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2&s=books&qid=1303759465&sr=8-1

It won't prevent access in case of all power systems being shut down, but it provides a variety of methods of getting to websites and protecting privacy.

There seem to be a number of initiatives that are springing up. On the radio side there is also the National SOS Radio Network (http://www.nationalsos.com/) although this seems to be more oriented toward natural disasters as opposed to civil unrest. The media here are FRS/GMRS/Ham radio.

One the purely ham side, although not generally “advertised,” there are patriot emcomm nets that are ready to provide crisis communications via voice and digital modes.

Also, there are various internet-based projects that aim to provide secure communications through encryption and keeping data storage local instead of in the “cloud.” The existing Tonido plug server can be used in a limited way but a more ambitious effort is the Freedom Box Project.

If you have a computer with a modem, don’t throw it away. You might need it someday.

Yes indeed. Most people won’t become ham operators because of the licensing higher expense etc. Hopefully ham operators can play a significant role, especially acting as “servers” to cross some of the more rural areas.

That’s good too. I don’t think there is necessarily one single answer. It’s good to “always diversify” including with emergency strategies, especially when your freedom is at stake. That’s a situation where there may not be a second chance once it is gone.

We have to think about the power grid being shut down as well. cb’s run well on easily stored batteries including car batteries.

Makes one think of the “Committees of Correspondence” circa 1773.

Regardless of whether it’s CB, FRS, GMRS, MURS or ham, the main thing is to learn how to effectively pass message traffic. A lot of hams work with various agencies to augment their communications capabilities and it’s crucial that everyone be intimately familiar with the protocols.

As for the hurdles, the tech license is $15 (10 yrs) and consists of 35 multiple choice questions (26 right is passing) and all questions are published. The questions deal mostly with basic procedures and very simple theory.

Yes, you can spend thousands on equipment but I got a good used 10 meter Radio Shack HTX-10 for $40 and it can be used for voice and digital with a tech license.

It really boils down to how much flexibility do you want and how serious are you about “serious” communications.

Now, a lot of hams have FRS radios in their go-kits because you can hand them out to unlicensed public safety personnel during an emergency deployment. It works well.

I have both CB and FRS radios in my shack along with ham equipment for 160 meters to 70 cm, voice and digital.

:) Good one!

Hopefully it doesn’t have to come to that. Always be prepared to defend the constitution.
