Assuming this Government Spending website is accurate, we learn the Feds spend MORE than ALL state and local government COMBINED! A whopping 53% (that's $3.7T)of the staggering total of damn near $7 Trillion ($7,000,000,000,000 - FY 2011)!!! And yet they demand MORE! (and we wonder why our economy's flat?)... It has become obvious that if government could(they would) confiscate ALL the wealth earned since 1776, (gazllion$) it would STILL NOT be enough for our Federal/State/Local 'masters" (especially the Feds)... they would still deficit spend!!! Such is the greed and lust for power in the halls of government! Will the new GOP majorities STOP this madness or be seduced into joining it??? We know the parasite that kills its host, soon thereafter dies itself!

I suspect that there is a lot of redundancy in those charts because the states get a large portion of their budgets from the federal government and the cities from the states. But your point is taken.

Here's something to ponder about cradle to grave social liberalism. Just think where our $14+ trillion national debt figure would be at if we subtract the money spent on the welfare state since the Great Society was instituted back in 1965. Btw, that welfare state spending since the mid-60s has been placed somewhere around $7-$9 trillion. Freedom isn't free, but those expenditures didn't increase Americans freedom. Rather, it has undermined liberty, hamstrung the US taxpayer and has almost destroyed the middle class. The fiscal mess we have today started long ago.
