It should surprise no one that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE), and that agency's parent bureaucracy, the Department of Justice, are hoping to wriggle out from under the dark cloud (hurricane?) of scandal that is "Project Gunwalker." Indeed, the denials and stonewalling are well underway, as has been discussed by National Gun Rights Examiner David Codrea and Sipsey Street Irregulars' Mike Vanderboegh (who adds more here)
Late last night, we found that Senator (and Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member) Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is not about to be stopped from getting to the bottom of this sordid mess--again, courtesy of Messrs. Codrea and Vanderboegh. Sen. Grassley's letter to Attorney General Eric Holder can be seen here. Here's an excerpt:
Unfortunately, the reaction to my request has, so far, been little more than delay and denial. I finally received a letter at close of business on Friday, February 4, in response to my request. It came not from the ATF, but from the Justice Department.
Sen. Grassley goes on to describe the DoJ's flat denial of any such scandal, and then counters with the fact that the allegations are backed up by extensive documentation. Some of that documentation (redacted to protect sensitive information) is made available in the appendices.
The "666" and "Mark of the Beast" in the title of today's column are not really intended as a theological reference--it's just a handy coincidence that "six hundred threescore and six" happens to be the number of firearms going to Mexico that BATFE's operation seems to have "lost" (just as part of "Operation Fast and Furious") Again, from Sen. Grassley's letter:
In addition to these specific weapons, the indictment of Avila and others references approximately 769 firearms. Of those, the indictment refers to the recovery of only about 103 weapons. So, where are the other approximately 666 weapons referenced in the indictment? Why did the ATF not seize them?
If not for the sacrifice of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry, "Project Gunwalker" would almost certainly never have come to light (what light it has so far come to, and one suspects that we ain't seen nothing yet), but Mr. Vanderboegh points out that, south of the border, there are almost inevitably far more who have been killed with "Project Gunwalker's" guns:
What we don't know yet, because the ATF and the Justice Department are unwilling to tell us, are the names of the faceless dead of other people in Mexico killed with rifles of similar provenance, provided them by SAC Newell and friends in the Phoenix ATF office. That such people existed is a certainty, and not just because our sources within ATF, those brave whistleblowers, tell us so. If with a wink and a nod you provide weapons to criminals, they will kill people with them. And they have, now on both sides of the border.
Indeed. There would seem to be enough evil here that perhaps the "666" number does have more significance than can be explained by science.
Or not--but there's certainly more here than has been explained by the BATFE/DoJ, and that needs to change.

I’m surprised that Sens. Colburn and Boozeman aren’t on this also....very, VERY pro gun, and anti-ATF.

Everything I needed to know about them I learned as a young teenager watching women and children get burned alive down in Texas live on cable TV.

What I find most amazing about this, these weren’t just a few hunting rifles and such, this was heavy duty equipment, .50 cal Barnett’s, FN Five Sevens, etc.......what the hell was the BATF thinking?
Or email them more then once.
That will get their attention.
