You don't “automatically” get Secret Service protection when you declare for the presidential race. It's some kind of formula based on threats received, standing in national polls and some other things. President Bush very graciously provided then Senator Obama with protection before he warranted it.

I am constantly amazed at the bravery of Sarah and Todd Palin. They have already withstood terror beyond the strength of most people.
When terror escalated against me over a period of 15 years I concluded that it would not end until I was dead or worse. I chose to end the barrage of continued assaults by taking myself out of the line of fire. It worked. The threats stopped. I have not been happy since.
I will always believe that I acted cowardly by not facing my accusers one more time. Truth is when I began receiving attacks from those I most respected and depended upon I could not handle it.
Sorry for the confession. She brings it all back. Again, I am amazed at the strength of character of this profoundly important couple.

Rush had a caller yesterday who was absolutely vicious. He was telling Rush he wanted to kill himself. The guy had more hate in him than I could imagine.

It sounded a lot worse than I'm describing it.
